Day 32: Amunì compà, Uma & Marco run to Sicily!: 31km from Campagnano to Rome St. Peter's Square

May 22, 2025by Marco Giuoco

"It's better to be kind than clever."

The route:

No matter what your schedule looks like, the sheep don't care!

Today's final leg of the Via Francigena led across wide fields and meadows, first to Formello and then to Storta; unspectacular but beautifully peaceful. But then, whoosh, we were already amidst the chaos of Roman traffic on the Via Cassia. Fortunately, we soon found ourselves passing through a beautiful, wild park (Insugherata), continuing into Monte Mario Park and finally onto Mont Gaudi. From here, you have a spectacular view, first of the city—and then, in particular, of St. Peter's Basilica.

The last few kilometers were pure survival training through the crazy Roman traffic - before Vatican City appeared and I had to weave my way through the crowds of people instead of the lines of cars.
.

Good? Bad? Ugly?

It must be the Catholic vibe, but my knees hardly hurt today and so I reached St. Peter's Square feeling pretty tired but pretty happy.

Starting tomorrow, the big challenge of finding our own route and navigating begins. But first, we had to solve the cell phone problem, because it suddenly stopped charging. A quick trip to Rome to the Apple Store, and we discovered that both charging cables were dead. At least I've spared myself the stress of a new iPhone for the time being.

A total distance of 31km and 421 meters of altitude.
