Day 19: Amunì compà, Uma & Marco race to Sicily!: 30km from Fornovo to the Passo del Cisa

May 9, 2025by Marco Giuoco

Nobody is coming to save you. You're the adult in the room.

The route:

Hard, but awesome! Today's stage was entirely uphill – over 1,000 meters of elevation gain from Fornovo to the Passo del Cisa. A brisk walk was required, as the terrain was often simply too steep to run.
The route led through beautiful, lonely hilly landscapes and almost deserted villages. And yes, for the first time on Italian soil, there were no bars along the route, or they were deserted and closed. The emergency provisions in the form of the mountain guide's bread and a few dates kept me going.

Good? Bad? Ugly?

Mostly, we were traveling on a narrow, quiet side road. However, it seems to be extremely popular with motorcyclists, given the daredevil way they push their Ducatis around the bends. On my short stretch alone, I counted at least six memorials to young ragazzi who had died in accidents. Was the fun worth the price?

Here at the Passo del Ciso, Emilia-Romagna ends and from tomorrow we are in Tuscany.

A total distance of 30km and 1,015 meters of altitude.
