Day 16: Amunì compà, Uma & Marco race to Sicily!: 31km from Orio Litta to Piacenza

May 6, 2025by Marco Giuoco

"In the end, what counts is what we have done and lived – and not what we longed for." (Arthur Schnitzler)

The route:

Sleep is the best medicine; so we continue! Through the rain, we walk along the Po River to the funny sign offering a transfer to a Po ferry. Two pilgrims seem to have been waiting for hours, and after a few sentences, we continue the walk. Not much happens until Piacenza, except that we're now leaving Lombardy and entering Emilia Romagna.

Good? Bad? Ugly?

The truly unbelievable happened after we reached the finish line at Osteria Vecchia Pergola. Sabine, once again, had an extremely delicate touch – the appetizer alone left us speechless. Incredibly delicious. We immediately ordered a double primo, and in our wisdom, we waited to order a secondo. It wouldn't have been possible, even with the best will in the world.
I've also had to abandon my "no alcohol until Sicily" resolution in the last few days. While non-alcoholic beer was still available everywhere in the Aosta Valley, here you're met with incredulous and uncomprehending looks. Beer and wine are also fine.

A total distance of 31km and 111 meters of elevation.
